The Quran And Fetal DevelopmentThe Creative Power of God Begins In the Womb of The Mother
The Quran relates many scientific wonders; one such wonder occurs in Chapter 23:12-14 which explains the development of a human fetus in the womb of the mother.
"Man We did create from a quintessence of clay. Then we placed him as a drop of sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed. Then We made the sperm into a clot of congealed blood. Then out of that clot We made a fetus lump. Then We made out of that lump bones, and clothed the bones with flesh. Then We developed out of it another creature. So blessed be Allah, the Best to create!" (Quran 23:12-14). During the time of the Quran’s revealing by Prophet Muhammad, no one could have related with certainty this wonderful act of creation with such scientific precision. The tools for such discovery would not surface in this world for hundreds of years. Quintessence of ClayThe Quran states that God began the creation of man from a small amount of clay. In modern terms this is the microscopic germ that comes in two parts; the ovum and the sperm. At the time of the Quran was revealed there was no method to detect or observe such microscopic germination. The people lived in the desert and concerned themselves primarily with commerce and trade. Very little progress was made in the way of scientific discovery. It seems that here regarding a discovery that would not be made for hundreds of years in the future, the Quran got it right. A Place of Rest, Firmly FixedIt is well known that at the moment of conception or for it to occur the fertilized ovum must attach itself to the uterine wall. If it does not firmly fix then pregnancy will not occur. However if the fertilized cell attaches to the wall of the uterus then it sits in a sea of blood and matter while developing towards its next stage. A Clot of Congealed BloodAs time progresses firmly fixed flesh becomes a multi-cellular lump. This would naturally give it the appearance of a clot of congealed blood or a mass of cells. Still too small to appreciate in the 5th century with the lack of technology and medicine, yet current medical technology confirms that this is accurate also. A Fetal LumpNext the Quran describes the lump of flesh as something that resembles what it will become. Groomed into form the lump of flesh is divinely prepared to become what will be recognizable as a human being. This transformation occurs as the lump strengthens into a human like form and grows a protective covering called flesh. The Best of CreatorsIn Islam the crowning achievement is not man. All creation stands as a testament to the Creative power of God and furthermore creation’s variation. However one of the most crucial developments on this planet is the development of a lump of fetal tissue into “another creature”. This other creature is the thinking conscious entity that is known as a human being; the caretaker of the world. Its life starts in the womb of the mother as the creative power of God develops it through stages. Men and Women are the only beings on this planet that can consciously decide good and evil for the world. God would have us decide on the good.
